Columbia River Bugger

Hook: Size 4 – 4x long Streamer
Thread: Black Mono
Weight: 0.025 Lead Wire
Tail: Black Marabou
Body: Dark Olive Chenille
Rib: Heavy Copper Wire
Hackle: Brown Saddle Hackle

Wrap lead around hook to weight fly.

Wrap thread around front and back of lead to hold it in place.

Measure black marabou the length of the hook and tie in for the tail.

Tie in copper wire for ribbing later.

Tie in hackle, by the tip, for palmering up the body later.

Tie in dark olive/black variegated chenille.

Wrap chenille forward to form the body.

Make 6 to 7 ribs on the body with copper wire.

Palmer brown hackle up the body and finish with a nice big black head.

Whip finish, head cement, and fly is ready.

Hi Don,

I hope to try and tie this fly before I head to Jewel Lake and the Columbia River at the end of May. I saw a video of your trip to the Columbia for walleye on the fly, and would like the info for tying the fly you used on that show. I thought it was called the Hulk, but could not find it anywhere. We appreciate any info you are able to pass on, helping make our fishing trip a successful one.

Cheers,
Rick.

I'll see if Kale can post "the Hulk" for you soon. It is a great pattern for Walleye.

I'd love to see tying instructions on the Hulk as well. I'd like to try it when I vacation back in Saskatchewan. I'd also like to see instructions on the Purple Enticer. I'd like to give that one a go on the Vedder. The show is great and keep up the good work.

thanks,

Kerry

I like to tie the fly at the eye and wind back, then palmer back, and wind my wire rib forward in the opposite rotational direction to the palmered hackle. I find this keeps the hackle in place when mauled by a fish.

What do you think?

Hi Jonathan,

Your method is the classic way to tie the fly and works great on a rotary vise. It also makes the fly much more durable.

Thanks for the input.

Hi Don,

Has Kale had the chance to post the Hulk and/or the 2 tone purple/pink rabbit strips fly with 3/16oz bead head you were using on the Columbia river for Walleye?

Note: I Hope to make it back to B.C. soon, it's Ontario for Walleye this summer.

Dave
