Italian Spider Fly

Hook: TMC 205BL Size 8 - 12
Thread: 6/0 Black and Red
Body: Pheasant Tail
Hackles: Light Dun
Wing: Deer Hair
Underwing: Olive Krystal Flash

Using Red thread, tie in a small red butt on the fly.

Tie in a Dun hackle, by the tip. This will be palmered up the fly later.

Tie in 3 to 4 Pheasant Tail fibers and wrap forward halfway up the hook.

Wrap the hackle forward, keeping it very bushy and tie off halfway up the hook.

Again, tie in a dun hackle, by the tip, at the halfway point of the hook.

Tie in 4 to 5 Pheasant Tail fibers and wrap forward to the eyelet.

Wrap the hackle forward, keeping it very bushy and tie off at the eyelet.

Tie in 3 to 4 strands of Green Krystal Flash, the length of the hook, as the underwing.

Tie in a small stacked clump of Deer Hair for the wing. Keep the wing sparse, make sure it is as long as your underwing and trim a small head at the eyelet.

Whip finish, head cement and the fly is ready for those Cutts.

This is one of the BEST patterns we have ever used for Cutthroat Trout.

Hi Don
Tried the spider fly on a lake near Williams lake this June and picked up some nice fish (3-5 lbs) on the shoals during a caddis hatch when some of traditional patterns stopped working. It was like fishing the flats!
