Terrace, British Columbia 2009

The city of Terrace is located on the west coast of central BC and is world famous for its multiple fly fishing oppourtunities.  The Skeena River flows right through Terrace and offers up every type of Salmon species, along with Steelhead, at certain times of the year.  We are fishing the area from August 28th to September 5th and targeting our two favourites, Steelhead and Coho.

We have had an exceptional few days so far with over 15 Steelhead, 40 Coho, 20 Sockeye (a few we kept to eat), numerous Pinks, 1 Chinook, and 1 Chum caught.  We are heading over to the Kitimat River today, for some big Northern Coho that can get up to 20 lbs and then heading over to the Copper River for some monster Steelhead on the DRY FLY....NICE!

Below, are some of the pictures from our adventure, so far.  The group is comprised of Dale Freschi, Rick Hansum, Kathy Riddick, Malte Juergenson, and myself.  As you will see, the Skeena fish are second to none...enjoy.

September 20, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBrian Forge

on your Terrace, British Columbia 2009 show, you tied Dale's steelehead fly with rabbit fur-purple/blue and pink, that worked off of a swivel bouncing off the bottom. do you have that video of the fly tying somewhere? thanks

November 12, 2009 | Unregistered Commenterttbjr

We did tie the fly on the bench for one of the shows but it will not be uploaded until it finishes airing on all the networks. I could post the tying instructions if you like?

Thank you for a [fly] fishing show with couth & much enjoyed , but must all programs be on large rivers or lakes. Might you try the small real tricky waters like streams or small rivers that you can reach across with say a 30--to 40 foot cast.

Hi great new site don, will you be adding the contest site in the future

November 21, 2009 | Unregistered CommenterBrian Forge

Hi Brian,

Yes, we will be adding the contest section back to the site once we establish some sponsors.

Anyway, I think you have already won too many times and shouldn't be allowed to play anymore :) ...just kidding, of course.

Hi Don

Like the new site.Nice to see the older shows as the stations seem to show the same show for weeks at a time at the end of the season.Like the Goat river one.Makes you want to sneak off to the Kootneys.

Hi Don
I was wondering when the fishing you guys did in Terrace will posted on the website, has it already been made into a show? Really interested in watching that one and seeing some of the techniques you guys used to catch all those fish

January 11, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterRich

Hi Rich,

Well I have good news and bad news. The good news is we did catch LOTS of great fish...the bad news is I left my camerman Les at home. I needed some time away without the camera and this was it. We had a great time and as you have seen, we caught a few fish. There are a few new Coho and Steelhead shows coming out in the new series this spring so you will get to see how we caught them. The one on the Kitimat river for Coho will be exceptionally enlightening :)

Thanks for watching.

HI Don,
I am new to fly fishing and often hear on your show that you sometimes tie two fly onto your line. I have not yet found a description of how this is done. Is it possible to do a segment on your show, or send me the info? I like your fly-tying style, it is very similar to my own. Your instructions are always easy to follow and fun.

January 12, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterSteve

Hi Steve,

We often use a two fly setup when the regulations allow it, as is the case in many states in the USA. There are many ways to accomplish this and if you google 'two fly setups' on the internet, about 50 references are listed.

We will also plan to show more of these types of setups when fishing areas that permit the use of multiple flies.

Thanks for watching.

Hi John,

We always fish the Skeena on our own, since we have plenty of friends that live in Terrace who own boats.

There are plenty of great guides/lodges in the area and the best place to find them in by Googling guides in the Terrace area.

We are heading up there again this August for a week of fun, filming, and fishing. Maybe see you on the water sometime.

Thanks for watching.

Hi Don,

I love the new site! We are planning a trip to the Skeena River this Fall and hop[e you can provide a bit of information on the best time of year for us to go. Steelhead and Coho are what i like but another one of our friends would like to tackle a Chum!
Any information on timing and fly selection and color would be greatly appreciated it.

Love watching your show!

March 1, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterGeorge Samaha

Hi George,

The best time, to have any oppourtunity to catch Steelhead, Coho, and Chum, would be mid to late Spetember. The Chum are starting to move in and the river is full of Steelhead and Coho.

The best fly colors are Pink/Purple and Black/Blue combinations in any patterns. Just remember, use darker patterns on the cloudy/rainy days and the brighter/smaller flies on the clear days. We have found that color is important BUT SIZE is CRITICAL.

Have fun and good luck.

Four of us are going to the Skeena from the Island in August this year and are planning on spey fishing in the Terrace area hopefully for Steelhead, any information or advice would be gratefully received. We all enjoy your shows and the diversity, keep up the good work, there aren't many good fly fishing shows on the air please don't loose your focus.
Regards
4 guys from Campbell River Fly Fishing club.

Hi,

I love your show, you guys do a great job. I actually did the whole Skeena pilgrimage for the first time last year in mid September and the fishing was quite difficult because the the coloured water and shear size of the Skeena. They're are many places to fish around Terrace, including the Kitimat, Lakesle, Copper... list goes on and on. I think Spey fishing is the best method because you can cover so much water. I found the hardest part fishing the Skeena was finding good gravel bars to fish, but I never fished below Terrace. The local fly shops are pretty friendly and will help with fly selection and point you in the right direction. I also fished the Kitimat, Bulkley, Morice, and Babine and had mix results...But hey that's what fishing is all about. I'm going to try and make it up to Northern BC every year, and hopefully stay longer then last time. Good Luck.

Keep up the good work Don, Dale and Brian!

Love your show! In my opinion, it's the best fly fishing show on the WFN network. The last show I saw with you on the Columbia river was really something. Besides the number of rainbows you were able to land, the river and surrounding areas were absolutly beautiful. You have one of the greatest jobs one can have. As a retiree here in north east Ohio I only have access to a few tributaries of Lake Erie, not bad but nothing like what's up there in BC. What a wonderful place that must be for the fly fisher. My hat's off to you Don.

Thanks for the kind comments Drew and Dennis,

We obviously have one of the best jobs in the world and it feels great when someone else can enjoy our experiences out fishing. We will always keep the show simple, informative, and really, 'it's just another day out fishing'.

Thanks again for watching.

I recently seen an episode from the Skeena River , aired on March 20,2010. You were using a pink and purple rabbit strip
fly pattern ,I think you called it a purple tiger.I would like to try this pattern in Ontario. Will you be posting this pattern on you site
,if not how do you tie it. Thank you .
Love the show

March 21, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterJason Prawdzik

I will be fishing the Skeena, for the first time, for a week in mid-August. I would love to try the purple tiger fly, but missed tying details re: hook size and type. Would you please mention them here so I can tie some up?
Much appreciated.....and, GREAT SHOW !!

August 8, 2010 | Unregistered CommenterHerkileez

Here is the recipe for the Purple Tiger:

Hook: Mustad C70SD Size #2
Thread: 3/0 Red
Bead: 3/16” Orange Bead
Body: Med. Fl. Org/Pearl Chenille
Zonker Back: Black tipped Purple Rabbit Strips

One of our best for the Skeena Steelhead and Coho!

Good luck and thanks for watching
